What does it mean to be
a man in today's world?
What does it mean to be
a loving partner?
What does it mean to be
a committed father?
It's not easy to be a man today.

If you are not sure how to answer the questions above, it is not surprising.

There are many men just like you who are struggling in their marriages or their relationships.  Like you, they want more happiness, peace of mind, and less distance and conflict.  Unfortunately, few of us really know how to make it better because we were never taught how to do relationships well.  Even worse, we tend to keep slogging along trying to fix it on our own.  And that is a big part of the problem.

Some guys can’t talk to their friends about these kinds of things, and need an objective third party to trust with these serious issues.  They want better tools to use in their relationship or marriage, and want to feel successful and like they’re winning again.

This is where we can help.  Northern Virginia Men’s Counseling works specifically with smart guys like you who want real results.

The first step...

Don't struggle alone.  Here’s what men’s counseling can do for you:

  • Counseling can help you clarify what being a man means to you and how to become the man you can be proud of.  Counseling can help you learn to ask for what you need, help you identify and provide for the needs of those around you, and help you achieve more fulfilling relationships.

  • In counseling, you can safely talk about trauma, loss, abuse, hurts, and disappointments.

  • Counseling can help you through transitions such as marriage, kids growing up or leaving home, mid-life crisis, aging, divorce, and changes in orientation, health, employment, and retirement.

  • Counseling can help you understand the effects past relationships might be having on your current relationships.  Evaluating the influences of the past can free you from repeating old scripts or stereotyping others as more-of-the-same.

  • Counseling can help you understand your current relationship, what you need from it, how you communicate those needs, and how to listen to the needs of others.

  • Counseling can help you create more meaningful and satisfying relationships with your family, friends, and colleagues.

Northern Virginia Men's Counseling provides affirmative counseling services - for men and couples - for a variety of issues.

Hello, I'm John.  How can I be of service?

So, I serve by guiding men to be the best men they can be, and by helping couples repair, renew and rebuild their relationships.

I invite you to take a few minutes to explore this website, read the articles and see what is here that may be helpful or of interest.  If you have questions or want more information, please call or e-mail me.  I would be delighted to talk with you.

I wish you all the best and look forward to talking to you soon.

Not long ago, someone referred to me as a “relationship mechanic.” Someone else called me a “guide.” I think they both were right.

I am a professional counselor and I specialize in working with men and couples.

Over the years, it has become clear to me that human beings are intended to be in close relationship with others. When those relationships are enjoyable, reliable, responsive and comfortably close, we tend to be at our best. And when they are not, we tend to struggle.

I also experienced first-hand - and later came to understand - that men are nearly always socialized in ways that help them to be successful in the world but also make relationships a challenge. Unfortunately, the skills that make successful relationships are not ones that many men have been able to learn or practice well.
